Presentation of the MODA-FAD Awards

First staging of the MODA-FAD Awards, which aim to recognize national professionals and businesses that in the past year have made a relevant contribution to the world of fashion design and industry.

The awards are based on four categories: the award for merit in fashion innovation; the award for merit in fashion design; the award for the year’s emerging talent; and lastly, the award presented by the board of the new MODA-FAD to a person or business that once played a major role and significantly contributed to the fashion industry but is today no longer on the media’s radar.

This edition will as well be a recognition to the figure of Carmen Martí Riera, a catalan seamstress and entrepreneur and a woman of strong ideals whose contribution to the world of fashion on an international scale was crucial and who worked to dignify the profession of seamstress in society.

Carmen Martí Riera was the creator of the Martí System, the first valid, technically rigorous pattern construction technique worldwide. The system led her in 1986 to founding the Martí System Dressmaking Institute in Barcelona, the origin of a network of training academies spread throughout the nation and Latin America that has contributed to the training of thousands of people in pattern cutting and dressmaking. Carmen Martí Riera was a key figure in the international haute couture centres of London and Paris and the most important ambassador for Barcelona and the fashion industry in the world.
