MaDe (Material Designers) project, funded by the Creative Europe Program of The European Union, aims to train and grow the Material Designer’s visibility; an emerging professional profile that wants to help the industry in it’s transition through a circular economy through the materials.
A Material Designer is a designer trained to detect unused materials from technical or natural flows and transform them into circular materials by using their design aptitudes. This specialist evaluates, gives ideas and develops materials that will be used as an inspiration for the creation of these new products that the circular economy needs.
The project consists of 6 workshops that will take place in London, Milan and Barcelona throughout 2019. In each workshop 20 material designers will design their own circular materials. The first workshop in Barcelona will take place in Elisava from the 11th till the 15th of June and the application is open to all the participants through the website.
During the workshops participants will be guided by experts in the field of materials science, sustainability, materials design, communication and/or business model to develop their own materials and explore their potential in products and industry.
Each workshop will be structured as follows:
Day 1. Materials first exploration: material sensor
Day 2. Tinkering: trying different material recipes
Day 3. Refining recipes and samples
Day 4. Demonstration of material potential
Day 5. Material narrative and presentation
After the workshops, 3 finalist will be selected by an expert jury among the 120 participants. These finalist will do a two month stage in three different companies where they are going to develop a set of conceptual circular products made with the materials they have created during the workshops. After the stages, the jury will select a winner who will be awarded during an award ceremony that will take place in Barcelona.
